5 Life Lessons From My RV Trip Cross-country

expansion intention presence resilience self-awareness transformation trust Jul 13, 2026

Life is always teaching us, especially when we slow down enough to pay attention.

Over the past couple of weeks, my family and I have been traveling across the country in an RV as we relocate to Bozeman, Montana. Along the way, the road has given us more than beautiful views and family memories. It has given us lessons. The kind that make you stop, reflect, and look at your own life a little differently.

Here are a few of the ones that stood out most.

Go with the flow

We can make the best plans in the world, but if we want to live in joy and experience the miracles hidden in ordinary moments, we have to stay open to changing them.

Anniston is a planner. She booked every campsite, read every review, and mapped out a full itinerary for our trip. And then, three days in, we had to pivot because of extreme heat. A couple of days later, we had to pivot again.

What we discovered was simple but powerful. We did not miss out on anything. We actually gained more.

Part of our original plan had us spending the Fourth of July in the Ozarks. We had to cancel that leg of the trip and redirect to Colorado instead. Later, we met a family who had just come from the Ozarks, and they told us it rained the entire time. They were stuck in their camper for most of it.

Meanwhile, we were whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and hiking.

How often do we grip so tightly to our plan that we miss the better path trying to open for us?

Where in your life are you holding firm to an idea, even though life keeps nudging you in a different direction?

Maybe the invitation is not to control more. Maybe it is to loosen your grip and trust where you are being led.

The pain is often in the indecision

At one of the RV parks we stopped at, my son saw a group of older boys playing football. He desperately wanted to join them, but he was afraid. They were older, bigger, and looked intimidating.

We watched him wrestle with it for twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes of wanting to go over.
Twenty minutes of fearing rejection.
Twenty minutes of standing in the discomfort of not deciding.

Finally, he did it.

He walked over, joined the game, and ended up scoring eleven touchdowns. By the end, he was one of their favorite players.

What he learned in that moment was something most adults still struggle with. The pain was not in taking the risk. The pain was in waiting so long to decide.

How much of our suffering comes from delay?

From overthinking.
From imagining the worst.
From standing at the edge of the thing we want, but refusing to move.

Where are you still hesitating?
And what might change if you simply took action today?

The gift is in our time

An RV trip across the country sounds magical, and it is. The open road, the changing scenery, the feeling that anything is possible. Every day brings something new.

But what I have come to realize is that the greatest gift of this trip has not been the adventure itself.

It has been the time.

Being this close to my kids for this long, without all the usual distractions of home, has been everything. No friends pulling them away. No screens. No schedules. No routines swallowing up the day. Just time together.

So many people have messaged me saying they have always wanted to take an RV trip with their family, but they have never done it.

My encouragement is simple. Do it.

This time is precious.

We asked our kids what their favorite family vacation has been. I expected them to say Hawaii, or one of our Christmas ski trips in Colorado.

They both said this RV trip.

For the exact same reason I would.

We think our children need extravagant experiences, when so often what they really want is us.

Our attention.
Our presence.
Our time.

Where have you been distracted lately?
And who in your life might be quietly longing for more of you?

People are innately kind

Everywhere we have gone on this trip, we have been met with kindness.

Smiles.
Waves.
Conversations.
Stories shared by total strangers.

There has been a softness to people. An openness.

I think part of it is because so many of the people we have been around are also traveling. They are out of their usual routines, away from the pressure of daily life, and more available to simply be human.

It made me wonder how different life might feel if we brought more of that openness into our everyday.

How often are we too busy, too focused, too locked into our own world to offer kindness to the people around us?

A smile.
A hello.
A moment of genuine presence.

Where have you become so consumed by routine that you have forgotten how powerful simple kindness can be?

Magic is everywhere

We paid to go to one of the most famous rodeos in the world. Families from all over the country packed into an open-air arena, ready to be entertained by one of America’s oldest traditions.

And yet, for most of the evening, I could hardly take my eyes off the sky.

It was breathtaking.

At first, a double rainbow stretched across the horizon. Then the sky turned shades of pink and gold, with bold beams of yellow light cutting through it. Later came dramatic grey and black storm clouds that rolled in but never broke. The contrast between light and dark made the whole sky look like a living canvas.

It was mesmerizing.

And it reminded me of something important.

We spend so much of our lives thinking we need to chase beauty. Pay for it. Find it somewhere else. Manufacture wonder.

But so often, it is already right in front of us.

If we would just look up.

If we would slow down enough to see it.

If we would remember that magic is not rare. It is everywhere for those willing to notice.

So let me leave you with this.

Where is life trying to teach you something right now?

Where are you being invited to let go, decide, be present, offer kindness, or simply look up and see the beauty that has been there all along?

The lessons are always here.

The question is whether we are paying attention.
